If you already hold a CeMAP® or equivalent qualification, The Competent Mortgage Adviser certificate (CMAcert®) is an excellent next step for your career.



The CMAcert® (Competent Mortgage Adviser Certificate) is a unique follow on course for CeMAP qualified advisers looking to gain the knowledge and skills that are highly relevant and valuable in the day-to-day job role of a mortgage adviser. Accredited by the National Skills Academy, the CMAcert aims to assist students in gaining their Competent Adviser Status in a shorter time scale by gaining the necessary skillset to prove their competency.


The National Skills Academy Financial Services has accredited the CMAcert® training delivered by Simply Academy. Good training helps people to be competent and effective within their roles. Who is it for?

If you are a newly CeMAP qualified adviser looking to improve your skillset and potential employability, then the CMAcert® is the course for you. This interactive study course will help you develop your knowledge of the practical aspects of being a mortgage adviser, with skills that are transferable into the day-to-day job role.

In order to enrol with Simply Academy you must also:

CMAcert® is a UK specific qualification and is split into five mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Finding Your Client

The backbone of this unit is to demonstrate the importance of continually attracting new clients. It teaches the key elements of finding and keeping clients, as well as how they in turn can be useful in recommending your services to others.

Finally, and importantly, this unit also explores how regulation impacts your process of advising clients.

Unit 2 – Introduction & Information Gathering

Unit 2 explores the importance of holding structured appointments with your clients and the skills needed in obtaining relevant information to support your recommendations.

Moving forward, you will learn the best methods of explaining how different sources of income are considered in the application stage of the mortgage process, and the impact that clients’ existing commitments may have.

Learn how to explain the costs your client will have to make and provide clear information to help them in their important decision-making process.

Unit 3 – Agreeing Protection Needs

This unit covers the key areas of generic protection.

Firstly, you will focus on understanding how the products perform. Next, you will learn to consider how life cover, critical illness, income protection, MPPI, house insurance etc. can be used to meet your clients’ needs.

Lastly, you will discover the benefits of clients having a valid will and the impact of placing a policy in trust.

Unit 4 – Mortgage & Protection Recommendation

Newly qualified mortgage advisers often make the mistake of carefully identifying their clients’ needs, but not implementing this information when structuring a tailored solution and recommendations.

In Unit 4 you will be introduced to software that is able to provide specific lender information and Key Facts Illustrations (KFIs) as well as consider the impact that lenders’ affordability calculators have on their ability to lend.

In summary, this unit will nurture your ability to design and present a package based on your clients’ mortgage and protection needs.

Unit 5 – The Sign Up

This unit focusses on the house buying process and mortgage/protection application form procedures.

Upon completing this unit you will be able to provide informed guidance to your client and thoroughly explain the process they are entering into, therefore proving your competency in the adviser role.

Unit 6 – Formal Assessment

This final unit comprises of your examinations leading to formal accreditation of the CMAcert®. It is at this stage that you demonstrate the knowledge and understanding that you have gained throughout the previous 5 units.

The tests in this section are all carried out online, comprising of assessments, activities and case studies. A summary of your portfolio will also be taken into consideration at this stage to confirm your understanding of each unit.
