How to Become A Mortgage Adviser

Becoming a mortgage adviser is a great career choice for those looking to enter in to the financial sector. The thought of training in to this specialised sector can seem daunting, but the journey to becoming a fully qualified mortgage adviser may not be as long as you think.

To become a mortgage adviser, you will need to complete a regulatory qualification to meet the requirements set out by the FCA. The Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) is the most well-known mortgage adviser qualification in the UK, held by around 80% of mortgage advisers. While there are no pre-requisites to undertake your CeMAP qualification, having a good level of English and mathematics is important, as well as excellent communication skills as the job role will entail dealing with a variety of people, from clients to lenders.

The CeMAP qualification is split in to three modules and further split again into units covering the necessary aspects such as UK financial regulation and mortgage laws and payments. Various study options are available to complete CeMAP training, from classroom-based courses to online distance learning to suit your individual needs. You will be required to complete a 2-hour examination per module, and once all three examinations have been passed, you will receive full certification and can use the designation of ‘CeMAP’ after your name to show your newly qualified status.

Completing your CeMAP qualification will hold you in good stead with employers, and as a newly qualified adviser, you can expect to start a job within the industry from around £20,000 PA with the potential to progress further as your experience increases. With your newly qualified status, you can look to secure a job role within a number of financial institutions such as retail banks, building societies, brokerages and even estate agencies, or alternatively you can look at becoming an independent adviser.
