Sitting an exam can be a daunting prospect. Whether it be further education, a driving theory test, or for a professional qualification like CeMAP, knowing that the only thing standing in the way of reaching your goal is to pass an exam can put you under a lot of pressure. So, how can you keep focused and complete your exams with confidence?

In this guide, the team at Simply Academy shares practical, step-by-step advice on how to prepare for the CeMAP exam – from building the right mindset to making the most of your study materials.

What is the CeMAP exam and what does it involve?

CeMAP (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) is the industry-standard qualification for mortgage advisers in the UK. It is awarded by LIBF part of the Walbrook Institute of London and is made up of three modules:

  • CeMAP 1 – Financial Services, Regulation & Ethics
  • CeMAP 2 – Mortgages
  • CeMAP 3 – Assessment of Mortgage Advice Knowledge.

Each module is assessed by a multiple-choice exam, and you must pass all three to achieve the full CeMAP qualification. Understanding the structure of the exams before you begin revising is an important first step – it helps you plan your time and know exactly what to expect.

How many questions are in the CeMAP exam?

Each CeMAP module is assessed by a separate multiple-choice exam. Here is a breakdown of the question count and pass marks for each:

  • CeMAP 1 – 100 questions across two units (Industry, Regulation and Key Parties: Skills, Principles and Ethical Behaviours). Pass mark: 70%.
  • CeMAP 2 – 70 questions. Pass mark: 70%.
  • CeMAP 3 – 6 case studies, each with 10 questions (60 questions in total). Pass mark: 70%.

All three exams are computer-based and taken by remote invigilation at a time to suit. Knowing the format and question volume in advance helps you allocate your revision time effectively.

How to get ready for CeMAP: step-by-step advice

  1. Change your mindset

Try to reframe how you think about the exams. Rather than seeing them as an obstacle, think of them as the gateway to the career you’re working towards – you just need to unlock it with the knowledge and skills you’ve developed throughout your studies. A positive, confident mindset going into revision makes a real difference to how effectively you absorb and retain information.

  1. Use specialist learning tools

There are always tools available to support exam preparation, and it’s important to make full use of them. Whether you’re studying via our e-learning or Fast Track classroom-based courses, you’ll be fully equipped with everything you need to become exam ready. Your CeMAP revision guide is particularly useful – it works alongside your course material to help you review and consolidate your learning as you revise.

A revision schedule can also help you plan what to cover over a set period of time, so you’re not trying to cram too much in one go. Breaking your revision into focused, manageable sessions tends to be far more effective than last-minute intensive study.

  1. Make use of past papers and practice questions

Your study course includes CeMAP exam practice questions to support your revision. These are drawn from hundreds of active test questions set by the awarding body, so they not only test your subject knowledge but also familiarise you with the format and style of the real exams. Try setting yourself a timed mock test to simulate exam conditions – this is one of the most effective ways to build confidence and identify any gaps in your knowledge before the real thing.

  1. Focus on the areas where you need it most

As you work through practice questions and revision material, keep track of the topics you find most challenging. CeMAP covers a broad range of subject matter across its three modules, and it’s worth giving extra attention to areas where you’re less confident rather than spending all your time on topics you already know well. A targeted revision approach will help you use your study time more efficiently.

  1. Look after yourself during revision

It’s easy to overlook wellbeing when you’re focused on exam preparation, but how you feel physically and mentally has a direct impact on how well you perform. Getting enough sleep, eating well, staying hydrated, and taking regular breaks are all small things that can genuinely make a difference – both during revision and on exam day itself. Check out Simply Academy’s full exam preparation guide for more general advice.

Is CeMAP hard to pass?

CeMAP is a respected professional qualification, and it does require genuine commitment and preparation – but it is absolutely achievable. Most candidates who study consistently and make use of the available revision materials go on to pass.

That said, some modules are found more challenging than others. CeMAP 1, which covers UK financial regulation, is often cited as the most demanding, due to the volume of technical knowledge required. CeMAP 3, with its case study format, requires you to apply your knowledge practically rather than simply recall facts, which can feel different to the earlier modules.

The key is not to underestimate the exams or leave revision too late. With the right study plan, the right support, and enough time to prepare, passing CeMAP is a very realistic goal.

(H2) How long does it take to prepare for CeMAP?

The time needed to prepare for the CeMAP exams will vary depending on your prior knowledge, the study route you choose, and how much time you can commit each week. Some candidates complete the qualification in as little as a few weeks through intensive Fast Track study, while others prefer a more gradual self-paced approach over several months.

Whatever your timeline, consistent and structured revision is key. Simply Academy offers flexible study options to suit different learning styles and schedules – so you can work towards your CeMAP qualification in the way that suits you best.

How soon can I sit my CeMAP exam after completing my course?

You can book and sit your exam as soon as you feel ready. Simply Academy will help you assess your readiness and advise on the right time to book based on your progress through the course material.

On exam day: what to expect

CeMAP exams are taken by remote invigilation and are computer-based, multiple-choice assessments. On the day, make sure you:

  • Arrive early and bring valid photo ID
  • Read each question carefully before selecting your answer
  • Manage your time – don’t spend too long on any one question
  • Use any remaining time at the end to review your answers.

Knowing what to expect on exam day can significantly reduce anxiety and help you stay focused when it counts.

Can you resit the CeMAP exam if you fail?

Yes – if you don’t pass a CeMAP module at your first attempt, you can resit it. There is no limit on the number of times you can retake an exam, so an unsuccessful result does not mean the end of the road.

There will be a resit fee to pay, and if you do need to resit, it’s worth taking the time to identify which areas let you down and focusing your revision there before booking again. Simply Academy’s support team can help you put together a plan for your next attempt.

How much does it cost to sit the CeMAP exam?

Exam fees are displayed on our website alongside our course fees. In addition, our student support team is happy to process exam registrations on behalf of students.

What happens after you pass CeMAP?

Passing all three CeMAP modules means you are fully CeMAP qualified and able to practise as a mortgage adviser in the UK. It is the benchmark qualification recognised by lenders, networks, and employers across the industry.

Once qualified, many advisers go on to work for mortgage brokers, banks, building societies, or estate agencies – while others set up independently. Some choose to continue their professional development by taking further qualifications in areas such as protection, equity release, or financial planning.

Simply Academy supports students beyond the qualification itself. Whether you need guidance on next steps, further training, or continuing professional development, our team is on hand to help you build on the foundation your CeMAP qualification provides.

CeMAP exam tips from Simply Academy students

Sometimes the most useful advice comes from those who have been through it themselves. Here are some of the themes that come up most often when our students reflect on what helped them prepare for their CeMAP exams:

  • Start revision earlier than you think you need to – most students wish they had given themselves more time.
  • Don’t just read the material passively – test yourself regularly using practice questions to make sure knowledge is actually sticking.
  • Break revision into short, focused sessions rather than long marathon study days.
  • Talk to your Simply Academy tutor or support team if you’re struggling – don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Trust the process. Candidates who follow the course material and use the revision tools consistently tend to pass.
