Are you a suitable candidate for a CeMAP course?

Mortgage Advice

19 June 2026

Two men study a financial advice report on a tablet. More financial paperwork lies underneath it.

The prospect of becoming a mortgage adviser can be both exciting and daunting. Being able to provide professional advice to clients making a huge financial commitment can be an extremely rewarding career, so ensuring you have the right qualification for the job is essential.

Here at Simply Academy, we receive hundreds of enquiries about our Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) training courses, and most people want to know if they are suitable to undertake the CeMAP course to become a qualified mortgage adviser.

What is CeMAP and who is it for?

CeMAP (the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) is the benchmark Level 3 qualification for anyone looking to start a career in mortgage advice in the UK. Recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), it provides the core knowledge and confidence to give professional, compliant advice on mortgages and related protection products. It’s widely recognised by employers and can open doors to roles with banks, building societies, mortgage brokerages and specialist lenders.

In short, CeMAP is designed to be accessible to newcomers and career-changers alike – which leads neatly to the questions we’re asked most often.

Am I too young/old to be a mortgage adviser?

You can start your CeMAP training and undertake your examinations from the age of 17, there is no age limit. So whether you are taking the first step on your career path, or you are thinking of a change of profession, CeMAP is accessible to everyone.

Do I need to come from a financial background?

To undertake your CeMAP training, you do not need any prior financial knowledge or experience. Our students, past and present, come from a variety of backgrounds, from stay-at-home parents to retired military personnel. A reasonable standard of English and basic numeracy is recommended to support your learning, but no formal qualifications are required to begin.

What does the CeMAP qualification involve?

It helps to know what you’re signing up for. The CeMAP qualification is awarded by the LIBF part of Walbrook Institute London and is made up of three modules:

  • Module 1 – Financial Services Regulation and Ethics (FSRE): a foundation in the UK financial services environment, covering regulation, legislation, key parties, and the relationship between advisers, clients and ethics.
  • Module 2 – Mortgages (MORT): a thorough understanding of the mortgage application process, the range of available products, and what borrowers may encounter after completion.
  • Module 3 – Assessment of Mortgage Advice Knowledge (ASSM): consolidates Modules 1 and 2 and develops the skills to apply that knowledge across practical scenarios.

Exams are sat online, and the pass mark for each is 70%. You don’t have to tackle everything at once – units can be sat separately, so you can build up to the full qualification at a pace that suits you.

Can I really become fully CeMAP qualified in just a few weeks?

Yes, you can! Our Fast Track classroom-based CeMAP courses are delivered over two intensive five-day workshops, meaning you can complete your training in as little as 10 days. Once you have completed your examinations, you will be fully CeMAP qualified and able to provide your services in an employed or self-employed capacity.

Prefer to learn at your own pace? Our CeMAP Self-Study programme gives you online access to expertly designed materials, structured learning plans and tutor-led revision tutorials. Most learners complete the CeMAP qualification within 3 to 6 months of part-time study, depending on their chosen study method and availability.

How much does CeMAP cost?

Cost is one of the most common questions we’re asked, so it’s worth being clear. CeMAP course fees vary based on your chosen study option: self-study courses start from around £425+VAT per module, while classroom-based courses typically begin at £575+VAT per module. Exam fees are an additional cost, regardless of study method. If you’d like help spreading the cost, we also offer a Buy Now Pay Later finance option.
